Exploring Penang With My Family This Christmas

A Merry Christmas to all my friends! First, let me wish you a merry Christmas and a happy prosperous coming new year as we go on to live a life we always want. December holiday has always been great festive mood for everyone as the kids are on holiday and parents will take time off to be together with them to enjoy a vacation. No difference for me as I celebrated a short Christmas vacation with my family in Penang. We put ourselves up in a nice suite hotel in George Town, The Northam Penang – All Suite Hotel, to enjoy a slower pace. First, let me share some research information with about Penang with you. Penang, commonly referred to as the Pearl of the Orient, is one of Asia’s famous islands. Penang entices many tourists who are drawn to the beautiful beaches and to the deep culture embedded within the island. Penang was recently declared as an UNESCO World Heritage Site and is situated on the north-west coast of the Malaysian peninsula, by the Strait of Malacca and it is the second smallest and eighth most populous state in Malaysia. The name Penang found its origin from a modern Malay name, Pulau Pinang, meaning the island of the areca nut tree. Penang can refer to the Penang state (Negeri Pulau Pinang) or the Penang island (Pulau Pinang). The capital of the state is George Town. The island of Penang is one of the main tourist attractions in Malaysia. The island has a fabulous coastline along with its rich multicultural history that is filled with European, Indian, Chinese and Malay influences. It is also known to be the ‘food paradise” of Malaysia.

Getting Around Penang By Taxi

Due to the island’s high population density, Penang is pretty congested during the rush hour both in the mornings and in the afternoons. The roads on Penang Island are also narrow, having been built during a period where such a large volume of future traffic wasn’t expected. We chose to use Taxis as they are easily and widely available around the island; it is the most common means of getting around by visitors. But bear in mind that the taxis here don’t use meters, so be sure to agree on a price first before boarding the taxi. Start by asking how much it is to get to your destination; you can negotiate on the prices quoted if you feel that they are too high.

Some Of The Places We Visited

Day 1

Queensbay Mall

Right away, we headed for Queensbay Mall after checking into our hotel as we needed to get all the things needed for the holiday. Queensbay Mall opened for business on 1 December 2006. It is currently the largest, longest and most modern shopping mall in Penang with a gross built up of 2.5 million sq ft and over 1 million sq ft net lettable area.

The Mall is located in Bayan Lepas, minutes away from the Penang Bridge, the heart of a prime waterfront development sprawling over a land area of 73 acres.

It is the most preferred shopping destination for both the locals and tourists – with 5 levels of retail’ Jusco as its anchor tenant with more than 10 junior anchors and 500 retail merchants.

Besides a well-planned tenant mix, shoppers can enjoy the “low rise walk-thru” layout which stretches as far as 500 meters with excellent visibility of the shop façade and merchandizing displays. The facility and amenity signages are meticulously planned to enhance the convenience and comfort of the shoppers.

The overall interior design and lightings are aimed to create a conducive and safe shopping environment for the whole family. Added to the attractions are the integrated entertainment zone on the third floor that provides a wide range of entertainment and leisure attractions ranging form multiplex to roller skating.

Day 2

Penang Hill

After our sumptuous breakfast, we headed toward the popular Penang Hill. Amazing as it may sound. A cooling environment in the hot and dry weather of Penang. Penang Hill or affectingly known by locals as "Bukit Bendara", is one of the only cool places to visit in Penang. A hill with elevation of about 833 m (2723 ft) has proved that it is one of the main attractions not only to the foreigner but also locals.The cooling and serenity of the hill especially when you are at the peak will provide a much needed calm and relaxation from the hot and bustling stress by the city of George Town. With the temperature ranging from 20 to 25 degree Celsius, it is going to be a place to relax, remember and rejuvenate.

The hilly and forested Penang Hill is founded by Sir Francis Light during his pack horse track back in the year 1788. However, it was during the 19th century that construction is carried out to build the hill into a place well accessible by local or even tourist alike which brings about the funicular railway construction at the cost of about $1.5 million.

Depending on the time that is available, you can either go up the hills by foot or by using a famous red Swiss made funicular train. Of course if you were to take a more relaxing train to the hilltop, you are going to miss on what nature has to offer such as a mist covered valley, giant bamboo trees, crystal cool pond, farm, wild dogs, birds and of course various species of plants.

Funicular train leaves every 20 to 25 minutes at a cost of RM4 per person that can carry a max of 80 passengers per trip.

Kek Lok Si Buddhist Temple

This holiday trip is not just a family vacation together but also an opportunity to fulfill our spiritual needs and to give as we have really been blessed. The Buddhist temple of Kek Lok Si is situated in (H)Air Itam, a suburb of Georgetown. You can make that by local bus from the Komtar, but you can also make it by taxi. I prefer taxi, because the taxi takes me up the hill (the Kek Lok Si is halfway on a hill). I like to walk down, but not to walk up the hill in a tropical climate. Taxi ride from Penang Hill cost us about RM15.

The temple was begun in 1890 and, from all appearances, construction really hasn't ever stopped. And it's still going on! The temple is supposedly the largest in Malaysia.
The Kek Lok Si project was inspired by the chief monk of the Goddess of Mercy Temple of Pitt Street. With the support of the consular representative of China in Penang, the project received the sanction of the Manchu Emperor Kuang Hsi, who bestowed a tablet and gift of 70,000 volumes of the Imperial Edition of the Buddhist Sutras.

Without doubt the largest and best known temple in Penang, the Temple of Supreme Bliss, better known as Kek Lok Si, staggered on the hillside overlooking the town of Ayer Itam. Since the olden days, the hills of Ayer Itam are regarded as important geomantically. Known as He San, or Crane Hill, they are recommended as a retreat for Taoist practitioners striving for immortality.

Construction of the temple started in 1893, but it was only in 1930 that the Pagoda of Rama VI, named after the Thai king who laid the foundation stone, but better known as the Pagoda of 10,000 Buddha's, was completed.

This pagoda combines a Chinese octagonal base with a middle tier of Thai design, and a Burmese crown, reflecting the temple's embrace of both Mahayana and Theravada Buddhism.

The latest addition to the temple complex is the 30.2m bronze statue of the Avalokitesvara - Goddess of Mercy or Kuan Yin - on the hillside above the pagoda.
This statue was completed and opened to the public at the end of 2002.

If you want to get a close-up look of the Kuan Yin statue, then go left as you get to the furthest hall, which is also the largest and look for the signs for the 'incline lift' to the goddess.

The incline lift is more of a tram -- an elevator-sized glass box mounted on rails which go up to the terrace above the existing temple where the goddess stands.
Use of the lift costs RM 2 each way.

It was really a great experience visiting the "Goddess of Mercy". If you haven't, then this is the moment to do it now! You will then understand what I have experienced!

Gurney Plaza

Wow! It was really an experience for the whole family after visited Penang Hill & Kek Lok Si Buddhist Temple. It was time for some food and shopping next and we headed to the famous Gurney Drive where Gurney Plaza is!

Gurney Plaza is one of the major shopping malls in Penang. Strategically located at Gurney Drive, it is set among the lush landscape of Gurney Park, overlooking the sea.

With seven levels of retail, leisure, and entertainment outlets, Gurney Plaza is designed as the ultimate one-stop shopping centre for locals, a meeting place for business associates and a shopping paradise for tourists. It also enjoys quality shoppers’ traffic from the good-class residential districts. There are many eateries there such as Dome, McDonalds, Secret Recipe, Starbucks, Coffee Bean and so on. There is also a food court at the basement. If you need any groceries, you can go to Cold Storage which is located at the basement.

Day 3

Wat Chaiyamangalaram (Reclining Thai Buddhist Temple)

With a short stay, we decided to visit the Wat Chaiyamangalaram (Reclining Thai Buddhist Temple) on our third day. This temple is located along Burmah Lane, Penang. Actually, it’s opposite Dhammikarama Burmese Buddhist Temple. There is a statue of a reclining Buddha resting on his right palm inside this temple. This statue, at 33m, is the 14th longest in the world. The top 5 longest is located in Myanmar. However there are two others which were not included in the list, one in Afghanistant believed to be 350m but it is buried in the sands, and there is another in Kulen, Vietnam which could not be identified.

The internal of Chaiya temple is a serene and peaceful place. The floor tiles are imprinted with repeated motifs of lily plants - a very oriental feeling. A HUGE reclining Buddha at the middle of the temple was only built in 1958, in conjunction with the 2500th anniversary of the birth of Buddha, at a cost of RM100,000.

Dhannikarama Burmese Temple

With a short walk across the road, we visited the next attraction located just opposite the Wat Chaiyamangalaram Thai Buddhist temple which is the Dhammikarama Burmese Temple.

It has a much earlier period in its development history. Based on the record, it was founded way back in 1803 (officially, it was 1st. August, 1803). The 200+ years old temple was formerly called Nandy Moloh Burmese temple. According to temple's record, the land was purchased by a Burmese, NONYA BETONG from a British named George Layton for 390 Spanish dollar with official permission granted by Lt Governor Prince of Wales Island, George Leith Baronet. After receiving the land grant title, NONYA BETONG donated the land for the construction of Dhammikarama temple. Even today, the lane that houses two distinctive temples is named Burmese lane (many streets and alleys in Penang island still retained old British names). Technically, this Burmese temple can be regarded as the earliest Burmese Buddhist temple in Malaysia.

The main attraction for Buddhist and tourists alike are a historical Pagoda, a 200 years old well for early settlement of monks, the main shrine hall, and the Sime Hall where a very tall and large all-marble Buddha image situated. Due to its long history, this temple was designated as one of the fifteen Penang State Heritage Sites to be preserved as tourist attraction for Penang back in the Visit Penang Year, 1988.

Batu Ferringi

In the evening, we headed out of the city for a more relaxing evening enjoying the sand and beaches at Batu Ferringi.

It may not be of the Malaysia "best" as the water is not tropically clear that you might expect but with the numerous activities that is going on - One may just forget about clear blue water. The beach is however kept clean, even on weekends when hordes of day-trippers visit.

The name "Batu Ferringhi" originate from a Malay term - Rock (Batu) & Portuguese(Ferringhi). It was during the 16th century when the Portuguese traders in search for spice, landed in the rocky isle of Batu Ferringhi (also known as "Lover's Isle") to obtain fresh supplies of water that the name initially favored.

When the Portuguese left the island, the local embrace the "Ferringhi" name to all foreigners, particularly Westerners. And this name has been affectionally called ever since.

Walking along the soft & beautiful white sandy beaches, you can spend hours admiring the beauty & tranquility of the palm shrouded beach.

The gust of morning wind will makes you feel that there is still a place for you to relax, rejuvenate & to admired the alluring picturesque beauty of the white sandy beach.

Others activities that you can enjoy the action pack water sport activities - Parachuting, canoeing, sailing, horse riding and more.

The best time to visit Batu Ferringhi is in the morning and late evening.

The roadside of Batu Ferringhi's beach hotels transforms into a bazaar after sunset every day. In a tribute to free enterprise, traders from all over the island set up their stalls under colorful canopies all along the stretch at this famous tourist attraction in Penang.

Much like the night market (pasar malam), everything from food to clothing, batik, vcd, dvd, watches, pens, souvenirs, cameras and personal accessories are sold here and bargaining is the order of the Night Bazaar at Batu Ferringhi day and this colorful carnival surroundings is a popular places of interest during night time. Tourists should take the opportunity to buy cheap souvenirs from the operators of the many souvenir shops here.

It has been a wonderful and spiritual holiday for us and there are still lots of attractions, good cuisines and stuffs that I could not cover here in this post as it was a very short holiday. Shanghai City Guide By Sean Toh

Hope all of you had a great Christmas & a fruitful 2006. It’s a brand new year and 2007 is the - Year of The Pig according to our Chinese Lunar Calendar.

Let me start the year by wishing all of you a great year ahead fill with prosperity and good health.One month just before the Christmas, I was spreading wealth in Shanghai by imparting and educating some kids in Pei Ming High School. It was an enjoyable and a busy 2 weeks working and seeing Shanghai in the evening and during the weekend. Although I had been to Shanghai several times, the economic development and progress in Shanghai is just too fast, tremendous and unbelievable!

Although I did not had much time but I did squeeze some time out to enjoy Shanghai and share my experience with all of you now. First, let me introduce you to a brief history of Shanghai and introduce some of the places of interests that I managed to sightsee for this trip. Let’s start with the history now!

Shanghai, Hu for short, is situated on the estuary of Yangtze River of China. It is the largest industrial city in China. Covering an area of 5,800 square kilometers (2,239 square miles), Shanghai has a population of 18.7 million, including 2 million floating population.

Originally, Shanghai was a seaside fishing village and in time its gradual development led to it being granted County status on August 19th, 1291 during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). Hence this day became the anniversary of the founding of Shanghai. Today's Shanghai is a multi-cultural metropolis with both modern and traditional Chinese features. Bubbling Shanghai shows off every aspect of her unique glamour.

Serving as the largest base of Chinese industrial technology, the important seaport and China's largest commercial and financial center, shanghai draws the attention of the whole world.

Modern Shanghai has three key areas of interest to the visitor. These comprise Sightseeing, Business and Shopping centered upon People's Square and along the Huangpu River. The city's Cultural Center with its public activities and community facilities and finally the main Entertainment and Holiday Tourism area is located at Mt. Sheshan, Chongming Island, Dingshan Lake and Shenshuigang Area.Known as "the Oriental Paris", Shanghai is a shopper's paradise. One of the musts for tourists is Nanjing Road. Huaihai Road intrigues those with modern and fashionable tastes, while Sichuan North Road meets the demands of ordinary folk. In addition, Xujiahui Shopping Center, Yuyuan Shopping City, Jiali Sleepless City are thriving and popular destinations for those who are seeking to buy something special as a memento of their visit.

SHANGHAI TIPS

Even though temperatures can go up to 40 degrees Celsius in the summer, temperatures in restaurants and hotels tend to be low. However, this trip was cold and wet and I managed to fall ill due to my body inability to adapt to the cold temperature.Haggling is a must when buying from a normal clothing or gift store. Bargaining a 2000RMB coat down to 100RMB is not rare.

Do not haggle when buying food or when buying items from a supermarket or large department store.

Most parking tickets are 10RMB per hour, and have several floors. You leave your car on a platform on the main floor; then, the platform rises and shifts to make room for other cars.

Depend on the taxi. In fact, many Shanghainese people with cars ride taxis when going short-distance.Starter fees for taxis are around 12RMB in the city. Starters fees are lower in the countryside. You can check by looking at a sticker on the taxi. After you get on, a distance-recording machine on the taxi starts ticking away, and the fee is based the distance traveled.

If you want, you can try fighting over the bill with your Chinese host at a restaurant. This is a popular ceremonious action in China that displays politeness, where friends jestingly fight over the bill. Usually, it is obvious who the host is: the one who first suggested eating out normally pays the bill.

ORIENTAL PEARL TV TOWER

The Oriental Pearl Radio and Television Tower stands in Pudong Park in the new and developing Lujiazui district on the banks of the Huangpu River. The tower was once the highest building in the city but now, although it's spire reaches higher than the Jinmao Building, it pales in insignificance compared to its mammoth neighbor.

The design for the Tower incorporates eleven spheres (or "pearls") and three gigantic columns linking the green grass below to the blue sky above. There are six high speed passenger elevators (although there are usually queues) inside the column taking visitors up to the viewing platform which affords great views over the city. One of the most impressive aspects of the building is the lighting. A computer controlled system alternates the light on the tower dependent on the weather conditions.

Although the Tower has now been surpassed in terms of height and design, many Chinese still see it as a fantastic symbol of the new Shanghai. Photographs and Postcards of the Building when it was first completed illustrate the gargantuan changes that have taken place in a short space of time here.

NANJING ROAD

Nanjing Road was the first commercial road in Shanghai. In the early 20th century, there were only four department stores along this stretch. Today, it has become the number one place for shopping in the city. The money at work in the road has encouraged many companies and businesses over the years to set up bases near here. Nanjing Road is fantastically located, stemming off the Huangpu River and the Bund at a right angle and linking the city's main commercial and residential districts to the mouth of the river. The road to the east of Xizang Road is called Nanjing Dong Road while the road to the west is known as Nanjing Xi Road.

In the past few years, mammoth changes have taken place here. The street was beginning to look a little down at heel and Huaihai road was pulling the wealthier customers away from here. A huge improvement plan was put into action and completed just in time for Chinese New Year. New shopping centers have been erected and a large section of the street has been pedestrianised. There are also some first class hotels scattered along the road including the Peace Hotel, and the Portman. In the evenings, the street looks at its best, with neon lights and advertising billboards illuminating the glorious buildings along the road.

SHANGHAI MUSEUM

The Shanghai Museum was originally housed within the City Library on Nanjing Road until 1995. This spectacular building is now the centerpiece of People's Square. The Museum is a harmonious combination of square shapes and circular ones, epitomizing the Chinese traditional concept which imagines heaven as round and earth as square. The design is also in keeping with Feng Shui principles and this perfectly symmetrical building is said to resemble a large Chinese cooking pot with two handles protruding from either side. In the evenings, smoke bellows out of the vents in the building, making the museum literally appear to be simmering away in the center of the city.

As well as embodying the modern spirit of the city, the museum also houses a great permanent collection and hosts various exhibitions throughout the year. Even if you are not a big museum fan, this place is worth a visit.

The displays are well presented and labeled in English and Chinese and it's an excellent indication of the cultural wealth existing in the city. The museum boasts over 120,000 pieces, including bronze, ceramics, paintings, calligraphy, sculpture, ancient Chinese coins, jade furniture, and western art.

FORMER RESIDENCE OF SUN YAT-SEN

Not far from one of the main Shopping districts and in the heart of the French Concession, is the former residence of Dr. Sun Yatsen. Dr. Sun, founder of the Chinese Nationalist Party and his his wife, Madame Song stayed here between 1918 and 1924. This small home is a charming relic of times gone by and a visit here is a great way to break up a shopping trip to Huaihai Lu and remind yourself of how Shanghai used to be. Dr. Sun and his wife were supported by overseas Chinese in Canada who collected money to purchase the house in support of Dr. Sun's revolutionary activities. It was here that Sun Yatsen reshuffled the Chinese Nationalist Party (kuomintang), reached an agreement for cooperation between the Chinese Nationalist Party and the Chinese Communist Party, and made out his plan for the "International Development of China."

Today, all the rooms are arranged as they were when Dr. Sun lived here and the house is a fascinating insight into the life of the revolutionary man. The small entrance fee lets you wander round the house and gardens and refreshingly, this is one sight which is usually peaceful and free from the crowds.

FORMER RESIDENCE OF SONG QINGLING

Madame Song Qingling was the wife of the revolutionary, Sun Yatsen. Song lived at this house on Huaihai Lu at various stages in her life until she died in 1948. Song Qingling (unlike her sister Meiling) remained faithful to the revolutionary cause throughout her entire life and was made an "Honorary President" of the People's Republic. The house here was built in 1920, and is a pretty western-style three-storied villa. Both this house and Sun Yatsen's former residence are fascinating insights into old Shanghai. There is a pleasant garden here too. On the downstairs lobby walls hang portraits of Dr. Sun Yatsen, Chairman Mao and Madame Song taken when Mao came to visit. It was in a room here that Song Qingling met leading members of the party and government, and entertained numerous foreign heads of government. Upstairs are Song Qingling's bedroom and office, and a quaint display of what are designated to be "cultural relics" that she used during her lifetime.

OLD CITY GOD'S TEMPLE

(Laochenghuangmiao)is a major yet relatively inactive, Taoist temple in Shanghai. It is located in the area south of Yan'an Road on the Fangbang Zhong Road.

During the Ming Dynasty, Zhangshouyue, the head of Shanghai County, dedicated a temple to the local city god. Since then, the City God's Temple has been destroyed several times and the current temple was built in 1926. During the the war of resistance against Japanese invasion during World War II, local merchants built a new City God's Temple in the Foreign Concession (between Lianyun Road and West Jinling Road). That area is now a highrise residence building. The "former" temple is known as the Old City God's Temple. The Old City God's Temple and the enclosed Yuyuan Gardens are not only famous tourist sites but also popular shopping attractions. There are boutiques, shops selling local specialties, as well as large jewelry stores, department stores and fabulous local snack restaurants to be found here.

LOCAL CUISINES OF SHANGHAI

Shanghainese food is not known for being the best in China! However, over the years Shanghai has become a city that excells at bringing together many different kinds of cuisine. This wonderfully modern and fashionable city has excellent European Continental cuisine in stylish restaurants such as "M" on the Bund and French, German and American cuisine are widely available here. There are a couple of excellent Indian restaurants in the Tandoor and Hazara. Italian, Indian, Thai, Mexican, Vietnamese and even Brazilian and Cajun cuisine are also on offer here and the style and decor in many of the city's best places such as Face and Ali YYs, is beautiful and unique.

Beyond the various cuisine of the world, Shanghai is a center for the culinary culture of China. Here, you can taste famous dishes and culinary styles from all over China. Bifengtang is a great chain serving delicious Cantonese cuisine. Beijing, Yangzhou, Suzhou, Wuxi, Hangzhou, Ningbo, Fujian, Chaozhou, Henan, Anhui, Hunan as well as vegetarian and Xinjiang cuisine are all available with exceptionally high quality and authenticity in this city. Shanghainese cuisine too can be very delicious and 1221 is a beautiful place to sample the city's unique dishes. My Experience At Surfer Paradise & Movie World

First of all, I will like to apologize for not sharing my previous experiences, as I have been too committed in my work and life. It was unlucky of me, as I have fallen sick for this week as I got a virus infection on my seventh nerve in my face that caused me to lose some functions in my tongue, lip and eyelid on half of face.

It is only this weekend while I still recovering from this virus infection that I felt I should write something about my short stay in Brisbane. I only had two days stay for this trip. Although it was a short stay but that did not prevent me from enjoying Gold Coast. Hence, let wait no more and let me tell you something about Gold Coast.

When people mention the Gold Coast. Various images come to mind... stunning beaches, exciting theme parks, sun-kissed locals, sophisticated style, the list goes on. The Gold Coast truly offers something for everyone.

Surfers Paradise, Queensland

Surfers Paradise is a beach resort town on Australia's Gold Coast in Queensland, noted for its many high-rise hotels and apartment buildings. The central feature of the Surfers Paradise CBD is Cavill Mall, which runs through the centre of the main shopping precinct, directly to the beach. The record-breaking Q1 residential tower is situated on Clifford Street in Surfers Paradise.

Overview

Every year millions of visitors flock from all over the globe to this Gold Coast beach to surf, swim, party and to have a generally good time. Surfers Paradise is full of fun and entertainment all day long. During the day, you can either head to the beach, go shopping, or attend one of the numerous theme parks and attractions such as Sea World, Movie World, bungee jumping, etc. At night, Surfers Paradise keeps jumping with various clubs, bars and the famous Conrad Jupiters Casino.

Getting There

Nearest major international airport: Brisbane Airport in Queensland, Australia

Airport transportation

Brisbane is 48 miles (77 km) from Surfers Paradise. From the airport, you can either rent a car or catch a coach to the Gold Cost. Shuttle buses to Surfers cost A$35 one way and A$60 round trip. For more information, check-out the Brisbane Airport Web site. If you are not in a rush to hit the surf, the city of Brisbane is a nice place to visit and has plenty of shops and restaurants to occupy your interests.

Timing

Surfers is busiest during the Australian summer season, which is December - February, when the beaches are frequented by tourists, local Australians escaping the heat, and crowds of young students enjoying their summer break. In addition to being the most crowded, the summer months can get very hot and humid with an occasional rain-shower. Don't forget your sunscreen; you can burn in minutes. We prefer visiting in late spring (October/November) — fewer crowds and the water is warm enough for swimming.

Lodging

A multitude of lodging options exist in Surfers Paradise, ranging from tall luxury hotels to rented apartments to inexpensive hostels. Hostels are an inexpensive accommodation option for backpackers and can cost as little as A$12 and as much as A$25+ per person per night. Cuisine

If you are daring, you can try to jump-start your morning with vegamite on toast, an Australian favorite, and wash it down with a cup of tea. Don't worry if you are as slow as we to acquire the vegamite taste, because Surfers is a popular international/commercial tourist spot with plenty of restaurants for everyone's taste. There's everything from Asian food to Italian to McDonald's, although the Australians have even added their own Aussie flavor to the golden arches. When you order a hamburger, don't be surprised if comes with one of their favorite toppings: a beet root, a fried egg, or a slice of pineapple.

Travel Tips

As the name suggests, Surfers Paradise is just one of the many great surfing areas on the eastern coast of Australia. You don't have to be able to show off Hawaii Five-O style to try it out. There are plenty of rental shops and instructional camps for all levels. Alternatively, you can use a boogie board or just plain body surf. The best surfing is beyond the sandbar that is just a short swim from the beach. Keep in mind though, the swim back to shore can be difficult, especially after an active day of surfing.

While you are there

If you're looking for a quiet, romantic spot, take a day trip to Byron Bay, just over the New South Wales border. For the 30-something and older crowd, Byron Bay provides an intimate and more relaxing atmosphere with the right touch of shops and restaurants. If you want a break from the beach, a short drive inland provides opportunities for camping, biking and hiking, as well as a chance to visit a number of national parks and nature reserves.

Warner Bros. Movie World

Warner Bros. Movie World is a popular movie related theme park on the Gold Coast in Australia. It is owned and operated by Village Roadshow and is the only movie related park in Australia. It opened on June 3, 1991.

Even though it is not Australia's largest theme park, it gets the most visitors (an estimated 5.2 million people a year). The concept of Movie World was the creation of the late CV Wood, one of the world's foremost theme park designers and President of the Recreation Enterprises Division of Warner Bros. Woody, as he was affectionately known, was instrumental in the design and development of Disneyland, Six Flags Over Texas and other leisure-time facilities. From the moment Woody flew to Australia in 1989 and saw the vacant land adjoining the Studios, the promise of Warner Bros. Movie World was born. Within 16 months, an ordinary swamp had been transformed into a spectacular movie-related theme park. Wherever possible, construction involved local skills and labour. Five hundred people were recruited and trained on completion. The park opened on the 3rd of June in 1991. Queensland Premier Wayne Goss marked the occasion by cutting novelty film reel. The opening of the park was attended by celebrities such as Clint Eastwood, Mel Gibson, Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell. Well, so much about what I could share.

As It was an extremely short stay in Brisbane, I did enjoy myself especially at Surfer Paradise hanging out as a beach bum getting to to know new friends from HongKong. I also fulfilled my childhood fantasy to take some pictures with my super heros.

Thanks for coming back to Best Experiences By Sean Toh. Today, I would love to share my personal experience when I was in Vienna. Vienna is a beautiful country that I would never forget. Vienna has plenty to offer for everyone. Arts and culture, sports and relaxation, pleasure and recreation. About 3,5 million visitors convinced themselves in 2004. The world capital of music was home to numerous opera, operetta and musical composers. Music lovers the world over are attracted to Vienna. 2006 will celebrate Mozart's 250 birthday, a fact already felt in many places today. There is a lot to be discovered along with Schönbrunn castle or Saint Stephan's cathedral.

Vienna's cultural life is multi-faceted. You have the choice of 50 theatres, four opera houses, two stages for musicals, 100 museums and numerous theatre, music and dance festivals. The Museumsquartier (museum quarter) with its baroque facade is home to one of the biggest cultural districts in Europe.

Vienna is known worldwide as a city of music. Quality orchestras and ensembles are its seal of excellence. Along with well-established ensembles for contemporary music classical music continues to play a vital role, as made evident by the City of Vienna Concert Orchestra and the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, amongst others. The Vienna Academy, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra and the Women's Chamber Orchestra are dedicated to tradition and modern music alike. International artists are a great gain to cultural life in Vienna.

Apart from the federal theatres and the Vereinigte Bühnen there are many small, private theatres in Vienna. Numerous theatre ensembles perform in old factory buildings or on public squares. A theatre for young people between two and 20 was established in the Museumsquartier in autumn 2004.

Replenish your energy in one of the many restaurants or Heurigen or retire to one of the famous Viennese cafes after a good dose of art and culture. For those keen on shopping there are plenty of flea markets and shopping streets to browse through. Accommodation in Vienna includes everything from low budget to designer hotels. Come and enjoy. Vienna waits for you.

During the summer months the Vienna Film Festival on the Rathausplatz in front of the City Hall attracts music lovers from all corners of the world. The City Hall provides a perfect backdrop for classical music performances and an international culinary experience along the many food stands there.

Dressing code

For business wear suits, outside business dress casual - generally jacket, tie for men and good dressy costume / garment for women. For going out tonight to opera, theatre or restaurant smart clothing is recommended.

Tipping

You usually give 10%-15% to taxidrivers and waiters at the restaurant. Liftboys and porters expect about 0,5-1 Euro.ticket-machines, but handling is not easy and the more the tariffsystem offers many special advantages and therefor it is complex. By the way, You can buy tickets also in "Tabak-Trafik", special shops for papers and cigaretts.

Practical tips for Vienna-travelers

Taxis and car-driving

It is usual that taxi-drivers take the shortest and/or fastest way from starting point to target point. "Black sheeps" can be there like in every branch. Nevertheless Austrians are correct drivers. In Vienna there 50 km/h is allowed, in some areas there is a 30 km/h-zone - specially near hospitals or near living houses.

Greeting and invitation

You should address people by their title and greet them with a handshake. The title is part of the name and Austrian people even have the right to be addressed with title. This goes back to Kaiser-time. When invited to somebody it is usual to present a small gift like a bottle of wine for a man and chocolate or flowers to a woman.

Schonbrunn Palace

Schönbrunn Palace is one of the most important cultural monuments in Austria and since the 1960s has also been one of the major tourist attractions in Vienna. Soon after the end of the monarchy the population of Vienna discovered the park as an attractive recreational area. Eventually the palace was also opened to the public, drawing around 1.5 million visitors annually. The park and all the other attractions at Schönbrunn together see a further 5.2 million visitors each year, giving a grand total of 6.7 million visitors to the imposing palace complex each year.

Hofburg Imperial Palace

Hofburg Imperial Palace is a palace in Vienna, Austria, which has housed some of the most powerful people in Austrian history, including the Habsburg dynasty, rulers of the Austro-Hungarian empire, and currently serves as the official residence of the President of Austria. It was also known as the winter-residence, while Schönbrunn Palace was the prefered summer-residence.

Parliament of Austria

The Parliament of Austria consists of two chambers,

the Nationalrat (national council) and

the Bundesrat (federal council).

The composition of the Nationalrat is determined every four years by general elections. The national council is the dominant chamber in the Austrian legislation.

The Bundesrat is fed by the individual Landtagen (Parliament of the States of the Federal Republic). The Bundesrat possesses a dilatory right of veto in most cases, that only a strong, persistant resolution of the national council can set into place.

The Bundesversammlung consists of the members of both houses of parliaments and convenes only on rare occasions.The parliament building is located on the Viennese Ringstrasse, one of the city's most famous and central sights. It was built during 1874-1883 by Theophil von Hansen as head of the government. Hansen concentrated on a neo-attic, classic Greek style of architecture for Austria's hub of government. Before the parliament building stands the Pallas Athena, a statue of the Greek goddess of wisdom. During the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, the building housed the Reichsrat of Cisleithania.

Modern Palace

The Gloriette at the top of the hill behind the palace Emperor Leopold I gave architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach the order to design a new palace. His first draft was a very utopian one, dealing with different antique and contemporary ideals. His second draft showed a smaller and more realistic building. Construction began 1696 and after three years the first festivities were held in the newly built middle part of the palace.

Unfortunately, not many parts of the first palace survived the next century because every emperor added or altered a bit on the inner and outer parts of the building. By order of Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, the architect Nikolaus Pacassi reshaped Schönbrunn Palace in a way of the style of the Rococo era. At the end of the so-called Theresianian epoch Schönbrunn Palace was a vigorous centre of Austria's empire and the royal family.

In the 19th century one name is closely connected with Schönbrunn's, Emperor Franz Josef I of Austria. He spent most of his life here and died on November 21, 1916 in his sleeping room. Through the course of his reign, Schönbrunn Palace was seen as a Gesamtkunstwerk (total work of art) and remodelled in accordance with its history.The palace complex includes sets of faux Roman ruins and an orangerie, staple luxuries of European palaces of its type.

Stephansdom

The Stephansdom (Cathedral of Saint Stephen), in Vienna, Austria, is the seat of a Roman Catholic Archbishop, a beloved symbol of Vienna and the site of many important events in Austria's national life.

The Stephansdom was saved from deliberate destruction by retreating German forces during World War II when Captain Gerhard Klinkicht disregarded orders from the city commandant, Sepp Dietrich, to "fire a hundred shells and leave it in just debris and ashes." One of the fires set by plunderers as Russian troops entered the city was carried by the wind to the cathedral and it was severely damaged on 12 April 1945. Fortunately, protective brick shells had been built around the Pulpit, Frederick III's tomb and other treasures so damage to the most valuable artworks was minimzed. Unfortunately, the beautifully-carved choir stalls from 1487 burned. Rebuilding started immediately, with a partial reopening on 12 December 1948 and full reopening on 23 April 1952.

Vienna Museum Of Fine Arts

The Museum of Fine Arts was built from 1872 to 1891 after designs by Gottfried Semper and Karl von Hasenauer. It ranks among the richest and most important art collections of the world. Due to the Habsburg family's fondness of art collections the museum houses impressible art treasures. At Vienna's Museum of Fine Arts you can admire paintings by Rubens, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Dürer, Raphael, Titian and Velazquez, as well as the most comprehensive collection of Bruegel's paintings in the world. Ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman artefacts and sculpture and decorative art from all major Austrian epochs round of the unrivalled art collection. Beware of overkill: do not plan to see everything in just one visit! The building itself was designed to resemble the style of the Italian Renaissance, a remembrance in the spirit of Historicism of an epoch of especial significance for the arts and sciences. Opposite of the museum you can find its twin, the Museum of Natural History. In the middle of the magnificient buildings there is a impeccably groomed expanse and a statue of Empress Marie Therese. Newly opened 'Museumsquartier' is just over the street completing an unequalled triangle of art and history.

Rathaus

The present Vienna City Hall (Rathaus) was part of the ambitious programme of architectural improvements to Vienna introduced by Emperor Franz Joseph I, including the Ringstraße, the Rathauspark (City Hall Park), and the Opera. Friedrich von Schmidt, who had been one of the architects working on Cologne Cathedral, designed and built it between 1872 and 1883. It is the most important secular building in the neo-Gothic style in the city.

There are just too many things to do in Vienna that I could not do due to my short stay. Nevertheless, I enjoyed every moments I had. Last but not least, may I wish you a great experience if you are thinking of exploring Vienna.

Getting Around New York City

NYC has a variety of comedy club venues, night clubs, live entertainment and DJ’ed party events. Lines grow long as the night lingers so try to avoid the late, excited rush of thick crowds. Sometimes only V.I.P. slip through the cracks of a popular hot spot. But don’t fear - there are plenty of choices to choose from.

NEW YORK THEATRE

As for the theater scene, no better boasts a larger following than the theaters of New York City. There are so many possibilities for this type of entertainment, it could make your head swirl. Of course, everyone, once in their lifetime has heard of Broadway- the subject of many songs, movies and childhood dreams. Productions are often referred to as Broadway, Off-Broadway and even Off-Off-Broadway. Theaters are referred as such depending on their prices, pay scales and star power.

Statue of Liberty

Visitors experience a special insider's view of the engineering marvel that is the Statue of Liberty. Time passes are needed to enter the monument. A limited number of time passes are available at the ferry ticket offices for walk-ins on a first-come, first-served basis or reserved in advance by calling the ferry company at: 1-866-STATUE4(1-866-782-8834)U.S. calls only.

To better understand this monumental work of art, visitors will be able to view inside the Statue through a glass ceiling, guided by a park ranger and an enhanced lighting and new video system. In addition, visitors can walk out onto the Statue’s observation deck to see the panoramic views of New York City and the Harbor, and witness the Statue up close from her promenade and Ft. Wood. The Statue's crown is not accessible and the torch has been officially closed since July 1916.

Located on 12-acre Liberty Island in New York Harbor, the Statue of Liberty was a gift of international friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States and is one of the most universal symbols of political freedom and democracy. The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on October 28, 1886 and was designated a National Monument on October 15, 1924. The Statue was extensively restored in time for her spectacular centennial on July 4, 1986.

Visitors will now have a choice of two options in experiencing the monument:

1. PROMENADE TOUR - This options takes visitors through the monument lobby, past the original torch to the Statue of Liberty Exhibit for a 20-30 minute Ranger-guided tour. Visitors will then proceed outdoors on the lower promenade and Fort Wood for a brief talk with great views of the Statue of Liberty and New York Harbor.

2. OBSERVATORY TOUR - This option incorporates the promenade tour plus a visit to the pedestal observation platform for an interesting new experience allowing visitors to view the Statue's interior framework through a new glass ceiling portal and taking part in a ranger-guided program learning about the Statue's design.

The Statue's crown and torch are not open.

Outdoor tours are also given by National Park Service rangers, staffing levels permitting.

Ellis Island

There is no entrance fee to Ellis Island. Ellis Island was incorporated as part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument on May 11, 1965. Between 1892 and 1954, approximately 12 million steerage and third class steamship passengers, who entered the United States through the port of New York, were legally and medically inspected at Ellis Island. Reopened on September 10, 1990 after a massive restoration, the Main Building on Ellis Island is now a museum dedicated to the history of immigration and the important role this island claimed during the mass migration of humanity in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Ellis Island is Federal property within the shared territorial jurisdiction of the States of New York and New Jersey. Currently the Main Building is the only building open for public viewing and is one of nearly three dozen structures on the island.

World trade Centre

The World Trade Centre used to be one of the tallest building in New York before the 911 attack and its sight was just magnificent. Below is an excerpt of what had happened from New York Times.

NEW YORK Sep 11, 2005 — America mourned the victims of Sept. 11 on Sunday as the siblings of the deceased read their loved ones' names to a weeping crowd at the site where the World Trade Center once stood.

One by one, the names of the dead echoed across the site where the twin towers collapsed four years ago in a nightmarish cloud of dust and debris. The ceremony drew to a close after four hours, the time it took to read the 2,749 names.

Relatives in the crowd bowed their heads and sobbed as speakers uttered brief, personal messages to the brothers and sisters they lost, many voices breaking in sorrow.

"Mom and Dad ache for you every minute," Linda Giammona-Julian said to her brother, Vincent Giammona, one of 343 firefighters killed. "We love you and we miss you; til we meet again."

"My big sister, my better half, life will never be the same without you," Rolando Moreno said to Yvette Moreno, who worked for a brokerage in the north tower.

As the names were read, weeping mourners filed down a ramp to a reflecting memorial pool at the floor of the site, which remains virtually empty four years after the attack killed 2,749 people and tore a hole in the New York skyline. Families filled the water with red, orange and yellow roses, some shaking as they inscribed dedications on the wooden edge of the pool.

Empire State Building

"Standing in lonely dignity in the midriff of Manhattan, a sentinel by land, a reassuring landmark by air, the Empire State Building is the quadri-faced pharos of the city. And until outstripped by the twin towers of the World Trade Center (1975), its 102 floors were the highest in New York. Though designed at the end of the so-called Art Deco period in the 1920s, when zigzagged appliques were prominent, its exterior shows little of the frippery characteristic of that 'decorated' period. It is, moreover, one of the very few skyscrapers with four facades, not just one facing the avenue.

"Zoning required several setbacks, but these were given a skillful buildup of scale at the lower levels, while the tower itself rises unflinchingly. Indented setbacks in the center of each of the long sides help lateral scale. An observation platform and a pylon topped by a television transmission antenna crown all."

"The architectural, commercial, and popular success of the Empire State Building depended on a highly rationalized process, and equally efficient advertising and construction campaigns. Skillful designers of Manhattan office buildings, architects Shreve, Lamb, and Harmon were familiar with the imperatives of design and construction efficiency that maximized investors' returns by filling the building with tenants as soon as possible. ...

"The Empire State Building, like most art deco skyscrapers, was modernistic, not modernist. It was deliberately less pure, more flamboyant and populist than European theory allowed. It appeared to be a sculpted or modeled mass, giving to business imagery a substantial character..."

Central Park

Take a walk through Manhattan’s backyard. Manhattan isn't only about tall buildings, food, shopping, theatre, music and art. St. Patrick’s Cathedral

Saint Patrick's Cathedral, the seat of the Roman Catholic archbishop of New York. is an example of the decorated and geometric style of Gothic ecclesiastical architecture which prevailed in Europe from 1275 to 1400, and of which the Cathedrals of Rheims, Amiens, and Cologne in Europe and the naves of York Minister, Exeter, and Westminster, are among the most advanced examples.

Walking into Saint Patrick's Cathedral and the medieval cathedrals of Europe, one would find a similar atmosphere of beauty and peace. The awesome calm of cathedral today is in sharp contrast to the hustle and bustle of the encircling cities outside. However, the cathedrals of the Middle Ages were the focal points in the lives of the people rather than retreats from life. Cathedrals were the hub of the action in the lives of the nobility as well as in the lives of the townspeople. Victory celebrations, excommunications, festivals, funerals, public meetings, and feast days were some of the numerous reasons for the people of the Middle Ages to flock to the cathedral. The bells of the cathedral were the town criers that announced the hours of the business day, called university students to their studies, and proclaimed great public events, a victory in battle, the death of a famous person, the birth of a prince or princess. Colorful processions would march noisily along its aisles and then through its portals into the streets of the city.

Times Square

Times Square is home to 27,000 residents and receives an estimated 26 million annual visitors each year. Times Square is thriving and retains the unique mix of creativity and commerce, energy and edge that have made it a unique representation of diversity of New York and an international icon.

I can only describe New York as a very fast and exciting city that you will appreciate especially the modern tall skyscrapers with lots things to do which will fill you with lots of excitements regardless it is shopping, sight seeing, musical, food….. You will love the Big Apple. Enjoy the Apple!

San Francisco, An Ideal City For A Family Holiday

Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge opened in 1937, and quickly became known as The San Francisco landmark. For decades it has drawn in millions of tourists and has never failed to elicit their admiration and awe. The bridge spans 1.7 miles reaching hundreds of feet above water.

Being that it is one of this country’s most famous landmarks, one must simply experience it in all its glory. There are quite a few ways you can experience the bridge: take a stroll across by foot, by bicycle, drive over it by car or bus, or cruise by boat under it. If you do decide to walk it or bike it, bundle up, it can get windy. When walking, start off at the aptly named Roundhouse located on the east side of the bridge. The historic Roundhouse was designed in 1938 as a restaurant for motorists passing by. Now it houses the Golden Gate Bridge gift center. Before you head back to the other side of the bridge, take a long stroll underneath the bridge through the 5-acre gardens.

Alcatraz

Known once by those inside as, “The Rock”, it is today one of the top attractions in San Francisco. Alcatraz was used from the 1850’s to 1933 by the military to protect the bay shoreline. Thereafter the government converted it into a maximum-security prison. Some of the country’s worst prisoners were housed here, including Al Capone. Alcatraz was considered a perfect area to house a prison due to fierce currents and the icy cold waters it was supposed to be inescapable. Though don’t tell that to the thirty-six prisoners who attempted to escape as well as the actual prisoners who did succeed in escaping, Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers.
Alcatraz operated as a prosin from 1934 to 1963. It was closed down for various reasons, mainly doe to the fact that it was a costly prison to run and because it didn’t have a program that would rehabilitate the prisoners. The island of Alcatraz, known as the Rock, a world unto itself, a part of history for some, a legend for many others.

Pier 39

Fisherman's Wharf

All San Franciscans love to hate Fisherman's Wharf. Content never to visit the area, they complain of the tacky shops selling cheap souvenirs, the "novelty" museums whose novelty has long worn off and busloads of tourists blocking the view to Alcatraz.

But secretly, everyone likes it a little, and having guests from out of town is the perfect excuse for otherwise cynical old-timers to "force" themselves to go. And it is possible to have a cheap, good time. Just avoid the wax museums and the "I'm With Stupid" T-shirt stands, and what's left are some of the best views in the city, fresh Dungeness crab and the ever-amusing sea lions.

Last year, almost 12 million people made their way to the Wharf. In international surveys, it ranks as the No. 1 destination for SF-bound visitors, right ahead of Chinatown and the Golden Gate Bridge. Oddly, this favorite spot, as they see it today, is only 30 years old. Most of the major attractions -- the Cannery, Ghirardelli Square, Pier 39 -- were built in the late 1960s.

Palace of Fine Arts

The Palace was designed by Berkeley architect Bernard Maybeck. It was the last building of the Exposition to be started, commencing construction on December 8, 1913.

For purposes of an exposition, the buildings were constructed to last a year. William Merchant, spent the last ten years of his life until 1962 planning the Palace's restoration. A move to preserve the Palace was begun in October, 1915, 33,000 supportive signatures were gathered, and $350,000 was raised towards the duplication of the Palace in lasting materials.

After World War I the Palace became a part of the city’s park system. During World War II, the Palace was used by the Army. In1947, the Palace was returned to the city. Though it was slowly crumbling away from wear and tear of weather and abuse. It was fenced off as a public hazard. Toward the end of the 1950’s a fundraising drive was started to rescue and restore the Palace. In 1964, reconstruction began, and completed in 1967 to a stripped down version of the original. In 1975, Walter S. Johnson added the remaining colonnades as a gift to the city.

The Exploratorium and Palace of Fine Arts are also close to the Golden Gate Bridge and the Presidio.

Lombard Street

Located in Nob Hill/Russian Hill, Lombard Street has been nicknamed “the most crooked street in the world”. While it actually is not the crookedest street, it does have a series of eight hairpin turns on a block between Hyde and Leavenworth. It’s actually one of the most attractive streets in San Francisco.

The famous hilly and winding street was created in the 1920’s to accommodate the steep incline. The street is paved with bricks and is one of the busiest streets in San Francisco. From the bottom of the street at Leavenworth, you can see cars slowly creeping their way down, while brave souls trek their way up by foot. Some of the most expensive real estate in the city exists on this street. To get there, take the Hyde Street Cable Car. From Hyde Street you can look down on Fisherman’s Wharf, Alcatraz and many other breathtaking sights.

How to describe KATHMANDU?
A medieval time capsule? An environmental disaster area? A pleasure dome? A tourist trap? A holy city? A dump? All of the above. There are a thousand
Kathmandus, all layered and dovetailed and piled on top of one another in an extravagant morass of chaos and sophistication. Though its population barely tops 700,000, Nepal's capital is far and
away its biggest and most cosmopolitan city: a melting pot of a dozen ethnic groups, and the home town of the Newars, Nepal's master craftsmen
and traders extraordinaire.

Trade, indeed, created Kathmandu – for at least a thousand years it controlled the most important caravan route between Tibet and India – and trade has always funded its Newar artisans. Little wonder, perhaps, that the city has so deftly embraced the tourist business.

The Kathmandu most travellers experience, Thamel, is like a thumping, Third World theme park, all hotels and hoardings and promises, promises, with croissants and cakes beckoning from restaurant windows and touts flogging tiger balm and hashish to holiday hippies. The old city, though squeezed by traffic and commercial pressures, is still studded with ageless temples and splendid architecture. Its narrow lanes seethe with an incredible crush of humanity, echoing with the din of bicycle bells, religious music, construction and car horns, and reeking of incense, spices, sewage and exhaust fumes. Sacred cows still roam the streets, as do holy men, beggars, street urchins and coolies..

This Buddhist temple is proudly situated on the top of a hill in the middle of the Valley. The unique architecture of Swayambhunath Temple is one of the most easily recognizable symbols of Nepal. From here one can enjoy a spectacular views of the Kathmandu City. Legend says that long long time ago the valley was a lake and it was known as the serpent's lake. The Buddha Vipaswi came to the lake and threw a lotus plant saying, "when this plant brings forth a flower, then Swayambhu, the self existent one shall be revealed as a light."

There are numerous fine rivers in Nepal which offer excellent rafting or canoeing. You can glideOn calm jade water with magnificence of scenery all about or rush through roaring white rapids,In the care of expert river men. There are clear sandy beaches to camp or take a meal, and cool clear pools to bathe.

The Trisuli River is Nepal's most popular rafting river. Impressive gorges, exciting rapids, some easier sections, and easily accessible from Katmandu and Pokhara. Recommended for intermediate kayakers and those wanting a cheap white water trip. Not far from the source the Trisuli joins the Bhote Kosi that flows from Tibet. The two rivers joining in some pretty fearsome looking gorges that are visible on the way up to the Langtang Trek. The Buri river, the Marsyandi and the Seti river ads to its flow.

When the Kali Gandaki joins it, shortly before the plains, it changes its name to the Narayani. Here, it is a truly mighty river, peak flows in the Monsoon have been measured at 25,700 cusec (extreme, instantaneous discharge) about 900,000 cubic feet per second or fifty times the typical flow of Colorado river through the Grand Canyon.

BASANTAPUR DURBAR SQUARE: Durbar Square means 'Palace Courtyard' where the king of Kathmandu once lived. It is one of the World Heritage Sites. Clustered around Durbar Square are the old Royal Palace which has been converted into a well-equipped museum.

Numerous other beautiful temples, shrines, Kumari Bahal 'House of the living Goddess', Kastamandap, a house build from the wood of a single tree and other small temples are scattered everywhere in the square. The main palace building is nine storied high and anyone can visit to the top and experience a panoramic view of the city.

Boudhanath is the largest Buddhist stupa in Nepal and is one of the biggest in the world. It is the religious center for the Buddhist population of Nepal and for Tibetans. Surrounding this stupa are monasteries and many small Tibetan handicraft shops.

Experience water rapids grade 2 to 7 in a beautiful environment of colorful villages, subtropical vegetation and colorful people will be unforgettable. All things considered, though, you'd be well advised to get your business here over with as quickly as possible. You will not be disappointed. Have a nice fruitful trip!

Among the splendid cities of the world that have achieved celebrity, the city of London – seat of the English monarchy – is one whose renown is more widespread, whose money and merchandize go further afield, and which stands head and shoulders above the others.

Windsor Castle is an architecturally distinguished, historic attraction and not to be missed. It is one of the Queen’s official residences and captures almost a millennium of British Royal History. Windsor Castle is very large and requires several hours to tour. From its magnificent St. George’s chapel to the impressive State Apartments, Windsor Castle provides important glimpses into Royal Britain.

Piccadilly Circus is a London landmark that like many signature locations, doesn’t offer much more than a dazzling view. Piccadilly Circus reminds the traveler of Times Square or Ginza, due to the preponderance of huge, glitzy, advertising adorning many of the building in the intersections.

The Tower Bridge (next of the Tower of London) is one of the most photographed images of London and was an instant hit after its construction in the nineteenth century. The Bridge was built with elevated walkways that allowed pedestrians to cross it while the Bridge was open to barge traffic along the Thames. The top of the Tower Bridge is a great place for impressive views of London. You will have to pay for access to the touristy “Tower Bridge Experience”, a tour that will provide more detail about the bridge and access to the engines that move it.

Take a walk-by of the Palace on your trip down the Pall Mall to Buckingham Palace or during a walk through Green Park or Saint James's Park. St. James's Palace is not open to the Public but is a building that exudes history and deserves a walk-by. Built in the early sixteenth century for Henry VIII, the Palace was the home to British monarchs for over three hundred years. It still houses some of the Royals but has been replaced by Buckingham Palace as the Official Residence of the Monarch. Religious services in the Chapel Royal are open to the public between October and Easter. Most tourists are attracted to the Changing of the Guard ceremonies that take place in the forecourt of Buckingham Palace. The event starts at 11.30 AM and lasts about 45 minutes. The ceremony, officially called the "Guard Mounting", does not occur during extremely wet weather. During the autumn and winter, Guard Mounting takes place on alternate dates.

Oxford Street, traditionally one of London’s premier shopping streets, has been taken over by chain stores featuring lower quality goods than were available in the past. If you are looking for casual "British style" clothing, this is the place to shop. Selfridges, an enormous but traditional department store, near Marble Arch is an interesting store to start your trip along Oxford Street If you shop on a Saturday, you will be enveloped by crowds looking for bargains and you might begin wondering if the claim that this is the busiest street in Europe is true. Oxford Street is a good but not great area for shopping since it is similar to shopping at home.

Harrods, a large, multilevel, Department Store, which has a reputation as the supplier to “upper crust” , is a London institution that draws thousands of tourists to Knightsbridge and Brompton Road. Most tours start or end with the magnificent “Food Halls” - shopping was never like this at home. The rest of Harrods does not drop the baton, featuring exquisite goods and high priced services. If you are interested, head for the home furnishing areas and compare it with what you find at your mall. Harrods has a number of good quality restaurants. Have a snack or a meal at Harrods; it is likely that you will not regret it. Finally, for some curious reason, most of us will find a way to depart Harrods with one of their green shopping bags filled some goodies. On the other hand, maybe it was just the desire to take one of those bags home to show the folks?

The buildings of Parliament are intricately detailed and you should take some time examining this delightful architecture. The famous clock tower at the end of Parliament houses the bell Big Ben (and at thirteen and a half tons, it is big) that has become one of the most familiar symbols of the London and the United Kingdom.

The British Museum is one of the world’s great museums. The venue is so large and complex that to tour it to advantage, you need to take a guided tour, rent an electronic guide, or purchase a print guide. If you really like museums, you could spend days here, as the museum has an incredible breadth of worthy exhibits. Madame Tassaud's (formerly Madame Tassaud's Wax Museum) appeals to many and repels others. If you are a fan, this is the original and worth seeing.

If your visions of Beijing are centred around pods of Maoist revolutionaries in buttoned-down tunics performing exercise in Tiananmen Square, put them to rest: this city has embarked on a new millennium rollercoaster and it's taking the rest of China with it.

Famed for its sheer size, the ancient and magnificent fortification known the world over as The Great Wall, with its several branches, runs about 4,500 miles (7,300 km) from east to west through northern China. From Shanhaiguan Pass to Jiayuguan Pass, the Wall snakes across ridges and deserts via Liaoning, Hebei, Tianjin, Beijing, Shanxi, Inner Mongolia, Shaanxi, Ningxia and finally ends in Gansu. The mighty presence of the Great Wall stands as a witness of the country's enthralling history.

Today's youth are more interested in MTV than Mao, rhetorical slogans from the Cultural Revolution have given way to butchered English splashed across designer-copy T-shirts, and expats, tourists, foreign investors and a mobile phone-toting hip-oisie are mixing it up with the bureaucrats.

More park than temple and fairly overrun with tour groups, the Temple of Heaven (Tiantan) is well worth a visit for its exceptional Ming buildings. This sight has become a symbol of Beijing, decorating tourist literature and loaning its name to products ranging from tiger balm to plumbing fixtures.

The temple was built in 1420 as a vast stage for the solemn rites performed by the Son of Heaven (aka Emperor), who came here to pray for good harvests, to seek divine approval and to atone for the sins of the people. Similar ceremonies were performed as early as 2600BC and remained an important part of imperial life through to the early 20th century.

The spinsterish Beijing of old is having a facelift and the cityscape is changing daily. Within the city, however, you'll still find some of China's most stunning sights: the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace, Temple of Heaven Park, the Lama Temple and the Great Wall, to name just a few.

Also known as the Imperial Palace Museum or Gugong, the Forbidden City was the place where the emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties carried out their administration and lived. Now it is open to the public as a palace museum where people can see the great traditional palace architecture, enjoy the treasures kept in the palace, and learn of the legends and anecdotes about the imperial family and the court.

Beijing food or Northern food is a combination of different areas varieties namely Hebei, Shangdong, Lower Yangzi River area, Inner Mongolia and Xinjiang. Peking Duck, Mongolian Hot Pot with Lamb or Beef, Sauteed Mutton with Scallion, Muslim Skewered Mutton, Shandong Chicken with Abalone and Cabbage, to mention but a few of Beijing famous dishes. In order to enjoy tasting all this cuisines of Beijing, learning to use the chopsticks might bright out more taste and flovour.

The Eternal City, Rome

Rome is called the Eternal City and is known as the cradle of one of the greatest civilizations in world history. Modern Rome is a big city with a population of about 4 million and it’s the most visited city in Italy.

The old proverb says "all roads lead to Rome". Today the world grew bigger and many roads lead to other places, but the glory of the ancient Rome still excites and inspires.

Rome is the largest city in Italy; the comune or municipality is one of the largest in Europe with an area of 1290 square kilometers. Within the city limits, the population is 2,823,807 in 2004; almost 4 million live in the general area of Rome as represented by the province of Rome.

There is a lot to see in Rome. Rome witnessed many historical events. Almost every building in city center seems to be several thousands years old. The most known ancient must-sees of Rome is Colosseum, Pantheon, Capitoline Hill and the Forum.
